Image associated with CHRISTMAS TREE NEWS at The Westgate Garden Centre

In October we visited the plantations where the Christmas Trees are growing, they are looking very even better than last year, good in shape and quality.

They are looking so good this year that we cannot wait to bring these lovely fresh Christmas Trees into our two shops in Thanet Garden Centres and our Garden Centre in Deal.

Our trees will be cut fresh and delivered to us quickly as they can, within three days of being cut, they will be in the Garden Centres from around the 25th November.

As time approaches watch our news items for tips on how to keep your Fresh Christmas Tree lovely throughout its time indoors, types of trees and prices.

Christmas Trees in Broadstairs, Westgate & Deal - 20/11/2017

Image associated with Christmas Trees in Broadstairs, Westgate & Deal at The Westgate Garden Centre

We will have a good selection of Norway Spruce Christmas Trees, this is sometimes known as the traditional Christmas Tree. They lose their needles more than the Nordman Christmas tree, but if put in a water retaining stand, perhaps taken indoors a bit later, then kept cool they should last through the Christmas season and of course they have the added advantage of that lovely Christmas Tree scent.

Watch out for more news on the varieties of Christmas trees we stock, to follow.

Remember though they are living trees so keep them well watered and when inside as well away from radiators and fires as possible.

Picture is of one of the many large trees we install around Thanet.

CHRISTMAS TREES IN THANET - 10/11/2016

Image associated with CHRISTMAS TREES IN THANET at The Westgate Garden Centre

We have the largest selection of Christmas trees in Thanet and Deal,

We will have Nordman Fir, these are sometimes called 'Non Drop Christmas' this is not quite true, they are one of the best Christmas Trees for needle retention, and if given water and not put near direct heat, they will still have all their needles intact when put outside at the end of Christmas, even without water they should retain there needles but will dry out.

Watch out for more news on the varieties of Christmas trees to follow.

LIVING CHRISTMAS TREE - 09/11/2016

Image associated with LIVING CHRISTMAS TREE at The Westgate Garden Centre

Pot Grown Norway Spruce, Blue Spruce (Pungens Glauca), Nordman Fir

Picture shows trees growing in their pots in the Fields.

The above varieties of Christmas Trees have been grown in the pots and are ideal for outside, conservatries, porches or cool houses.

These trees will survive indoors for the Christmas period, providing they are not put next to a radiator or direct heat and are kept well watered.

The best way to keep them is put the tree and pot in a larger pot or cover that has 2inches or 50mm of grit or gravel in the bottom, and keep this covered with water, this will not only keep the tree moist but will also cause humidity which the tree will thrive on.

Once Christmas is over, if the tree has been in a reasonably warm/hot house DO NOT PUT directly outside, but gradually cool it down first, like moving to a porch, garage or shed.

Once cooled down it can be planted directly into the garden, or you can sink the pot in the ground you will then be able to lift the tree and pot to take indoors for it's second Christmas.

If you just put outside and leave in the pot, don't forget to make sure it is kept moist.

If you follow these few simple guidelines then your pot grown Christmas Tree should grow again for the following Christmas.

Notes on more varieties soon.

Image associated with MINI-CYCLAMEN READY TO PLANT OUTSIDE at The Westgate Garden Centre

Colourful Mini Cyclamen are now ready for your winter Baskets, troughs & Window Boxes.

Also Autumn/winter flowering Pansies, Viola, and Fore-get-me-nots in colour and ready for planting out now.

WINTER PLANTING TIPS

Always use a good well draining soil, you can use multi-purpose compost but it is advisable to add some grit or John Innes Compost(this has grit in it) this will help if we have a long wet winter, as some plants, especially pansies do not like to be constantly wet.

Composts good for winter Baskets and Containers are Multi-purpose with added John Innes or Jacks Magic. Please ask if you need any advice we are always happy to help.

Try to plant Mini Cyclamen with the corm slightly raised above the soil, as too much moisture can penetrate the corm and cause it to rot.

GARDEN JOBS FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER - 09/10/2016

Image associated with GARDEN JOBS FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER at The Westgate Garden Centre

Autumn has arrived all too quickly and there are so many things we need to do in the garden before Winter, looking after the lawn is one of them.

Autumn is the time to check out how the Summer has damaged the Lawn, now is the time to make repairs if they are needed before the temperature drops and the lawn stops growing. It is a good idea to aerate the lawn if it has not been done for a few years, every four to five years is good. There are many specific tools to aerate the lawn, or you can use an ordinary garden digging fork. Concentrate of areas that are compacted and get most wear.

Now is the time to scarify the lawn, this is raking through with a grass rake, to take out old grass stems, moss and thatch. If the moss, thatch etc. get too thick they can impede water and fertiliser penetration.

Worm casts can also be a problem, there is a very good product available at the Garden Centre called cast clear, it is easy to use and very effective.

Feeding with an autumn fertiliser is recommended, one good product now is Neudorff CLEAN LAWN 3 in 1 Organic fertiliser derived from natural raw materials – fertilises the lawn , improves the soil and has an indirect action against moss, contains Mycorrhiza fungi for strong roots and improved resistance against drought and frost.

TROUBLESOME WORM CASTS IN THE LAWN - 12/09/2015

Image associated with TROUBLESOME WORM CASTS IN THE LAWN at The Westgate Garden Centre

Don't under estimate how many worms your lawn can have per a single square metre as the minimum can be around 45 and the maximum recorded is 170!

Cast Clear is an organic and unique combination of nutrient materials that have been clearly shown to reduce worm-cast levels on lawns large and small. It does not kill the worms but deters them from entering the upper surface of the lawn and depositing their burrows soil on the surface of the lawn.

An application of CastClear will greatly prolong the use of the lawn in the autumn to spring months and protect the existing surface of the lawn so that you might end up with grass cover in the spring. The overall micro levels of the lawn will instantly be improved.

It is unique in using a surfactant system that moves the nutrient into the upper soil structure and fixes it there providing good persistence of deterrent effect until breaking down to natural nutrients absorbed by plant roots.

Initial Treatment 200 Millilitre in a Minimum 2.5 Litres of water will treat a 100 Square Metres

10-20 days Re-Apply 70 Millilitres in a Minimum 2.5 Litres of water to 100 Square Metres

250ML £9.99 500ML £19.99 1LITRE £29.99

Do not apply during rainfall or if rain is expected soon after application.

Mow the lawn area beforehand and keep off the lawn for 24 hours following application. Do not mow for three days after application.

Best applied via a small compression sprayer fitted with a medium spray nozzle. Do not use a watering can as the droplet size is all wrong and you will not get even coverage. Follow your mowing lines and apply across the complete surface of the lawn including the corners and edges!

Please read the product label carefully and ensure that you are wearing suitable personal protective equipment like non-absorbant gloves as with other lawn treatment and care products.

RSPB FEED THE BIRDS DAY 24TH OCTOBER 2015 - 01/01/2014

The RSPB would like to bring our attention to the Wild Birds during the Winter months by holding an awareness day.

Here some simple Do's & Don't to help protect our Garden Birds:

DO'S:

TOP OF THE LIST & MOST IMPORTANT IS WATER

Water can be put in birds baths, you can purchase water feeders or just a shallow dish, in the shade if possible away from falling leaves & debris, try to keep clean as much as possible.

FOOD:

Seeds, black sunflowers, sunflower hearts, peanuts, mealworms, Suet cakes, fat balls, energy bites, nyjer seed, cut up bacon rind, dried fruit(soaked if possible) , fresh fruit, melon seeds, cooked rice, cereals, dog and cat food,

DON'TS

Never give any milk to birds. Not too much bread, it is filling but no nutrient value, Fat from cooking pans, saturated fats, margarine, dry biscuits, coco nut should only be in the shell(washed out and hung up), Desiccated coconut is definitely out of bounds.

HYGIENE: It is important to keep bird tables and water containers clean and fresh, some mouldy foods can be very harmful to the birds.

You can use this link to the RSPB website for more information: http://www.rspb.org.uk/makeahomeforwildlife/advice/helpingbirds/feeding
